My collection spans from the inception of Sunset Magazine up to around the 1970s. How I Collect Sunsets

The very first vintage Sunset Magazine that I purchased was found at a second hand store located in the “Gold Country” of California, possibly Amador City or Jackson, California (I can’t quite remember). Something about it intrigued me — I was always a fan of Sunset, so finding a very old vintage copy was super intriguing. After that, I was inspired to purchase some 50s Sunset Magazines, as I had recently purchase my first home, an old ranch style home in the Bay Area that was essentially unchanged since the 50s. I appreciated the ranch house styling and was getting into the whole mid century modern thing. I found those vintage issues really fun to flip through — it felt like a walk back in time. Every page had something interesting, whether it was an old Coca-Cola advertisement, or an article about old ranch houses or open concept housing. Following these early purchases, I started finding more issues from Etsy and Ebay and noticed the cover art changed throughout the decades. The covers alone are pieces of art. From there, a collecting habit was born! I’m now at more than 100 copies of classic Sunset Magazines. My collection goals at the moment are to have at least one issue from every year between 1898 and 1940. I’ve got a few gaps here and there, so it is a nice challenge. Issues pop up for sale very randomly on both Ebay, Etsy, Abe Books and various other sources that can be found through Google Shopping. It’s a fun challenge and I’m always on the lookout for really great Sunset cover art.
