In 1908, San Francisco was recovering from the devastating earthquake and fire that had struck the city in 1906. The earthquake, which occurred on April 18, 1906, caused widespread damage and destruction throughout the city, and was followed by a fire that burned for several days and destroyed much of the city. By 1908, much of the rebuilding and reconstruction efforts had been completed, and the city was beginning to return to a sense of normalcy. However, the effects of the disaster were still evident, as many parts of the city had been permanently altered by the destruction.
