Sunset Magazine March 1916

One of my absolute favorite Sunset Magazine covers. Featuring the golden orange California poppy. A very bright and colorful cover that has aged very well given it’s from 1916!

There is some interesting history behind this cover headline though:

In 1916, the state was in the midst of a drought that lasted from 1913 to 1917. This drought likely had an impact on the weather in California in 1916, with hotter and drier conditions than usual.

However, it is worth noting that 1916 was also marked by a significant weather event known as the "Great Flood of 1916," which affected much of the state. This flood, which occurred in the winter of 1916, was caused by a series of storms that brought heavy rainfall to California, leading to widespread flooding and property damage. The flood was particularly severe in the Central Valley, where many towns and cities were inundated by floodwaters.
