Sunset Magazine October 1901. This issue (Vol. VII, No. 6) includes a supplement portrait of William McKinley. The cover features huge gray "SUNSET" lettering above two large dark-red roses framing a moonlit silhouette, with "A Magazine of..." along the bottom. Published just weeks after President William McKinley's assassination in September 1901, this issue's memorial portrait captures a nation in mourning. Still owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Sunset was then a fledgling magazine promoting the West, and its "A Magazine of the Border" tagline reflected the railroad's campaign to lure travelers and settlers westward.
